SU's Ministry, Staff Grows; Ministry Impact Expands

Scripture Union’s staff and ministry are growing! New regional offices have recently opened  in the Southeast and Mountain West areas of the country, leading to a significant expansion of SU’s ministry of sharing God’s Word with people of all ages.

New Outreach in Florida and the Southeast

With the help of a foundation grant, SU’s Southeast Region, headquartered in St. Petersburg, FL, opened in early April. Mr. Brandon McGuire (pictured to the left), a graduate of Palm Beach Atlantic University, was hired as the first SE Regional Director and immediately organized a SuperKids mini-camp in Auburndale, Fl at the end of that month. This 4 day program introduced the local churches to SU’s ministry to at-risk children , and was followed by a one day SuperKids rally in a local park—a great day of sharing God’s love and God’s Word with many local children!

Colorado Based Ministry to At-Risk Youth

The Mountain West Region, based in Colorado, also recently received a start-up grant and has begun initial outreach, partnering with a number of inner city churches in the Denver Metro area. David Stephen, the Regional Director, and new Field Program Associate Michelle Nyhoff have begun introducing SuperKids and PrimeTime programs to area churches and schools through a partnership with Whiz Kids Tutoring, which serves in 54 locations throughout the city.

 The SU-Whiz Kids Partnership

Whiz Kids Tutoring is a Denver based elementary aged mentoring program for youth-at-risk in the public schools. It aims at "improving the lives of disadvantaged kids through academic tutoring, positive mentoring relationships and spiritual nurture."  Whiz Kids partners with local churches to provide spiritually mature mentors and tutors to children and their families.  Beginning next fall, Whiz Kids will use SU’s PrimeTime material as the spiritual component to their programs. In addition, Lisa Williams, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Director, located in Greater Philadelphia, is now training with Whiz Kids Tutoring to bring this program to public schools in the Philadelphia area. Through this partnership, SU’s ministry will reach even more at-risk inner city children with the Good News of Jesus Christ.

  Ministry Growth in Dallas, Pittsburgh

Sonja Samuel, SU’s Regional Director based in Dallas, Texas recently met with local ministry leaders there in preparation for launching new partnerships with two local ministries to at-risk youth beginning in this summer.  Again, the SU SuperKids and PrimeTime materials are the basis for these community outreach programs and will share God’s Word with many children and youth there this summer.

The Pittsburgh/Great Lakes Region is also growing its ministry. In addition to engaging over 160 churches in the E100, it has as many as six new SuperKids outreach programs in distressed areas around Pittsburgh set for this summer.

These reports “from the field” are encouraging examples of how God is graciously blessing SU’s efforts to “help people of all ages meet God every day in his Word and prayer”. For more information about these programs or how you can be involved, contact the SU office at 1-800-621-LAMP (5267).
