Our Mission

Who We Are

Scripture Union/USA began in 1959 and is committed to "helping children, young people and their families know God’s love, follow Jesus and meet God daily in His Word." Today, Scripture Union conducts evangelism and discipleship programs for children, youth and families in various locations across the country. In addition, Scripture Union has a variety of Bible reading publications and programs for all ages.

Scripture Union/USA is headquartered in Valley Forge, PA and is a Charter Member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA).  In addition, Scripture Union/USA is part of a worldwide fellowship of Scripture Union ministries in over 130 countries (Scripture Union International). Each Scripture Union movement is autonomous and indigenously led and staffed. There are currently 4,500,000 people who use Scripture Union Bible reading guides worldwide.

What We Do

What We DoScripture Union USA partners with churches and other groups to make God's Good News known among children and youth through a variety of creative methods. These include PrimeTime® faith-based after school programs, SuperKids summer outreach missions, and daily Bible reading programs for children and youth.

Scripture Union USA encourages people of all ages to meet God every day. To that end, we publish Bible reading guides for children, youth and adults. Our adult guides are Discovery®, SU's basic series for finding practical help from the Bible; Encounter with God®, the advanced guide for meeting God daily in His Word; SUbmerge for youth andSnap Shots for children. In addition, programs such as The Essential 100 Challenge offer churches creative tools to promote Bible reading.

How We Do What We Do

Scripture Union is an organization of volunteers united by a common committment to meeting God in His Word and sharing God's love with children, young people and their families. We have a small number of dedicated staff who train and equip volunteers to minister to children and to introduce people to the rewards of regular Bible reading.

In carrying out our mission, we partner with organizations such as the Salvation Army as well as local churches to deliver creative outreach programs that introduce children to Jesus and teach them about God's love. A growing partnership with The American Bible Society is intended to help engage people across the country in a new or renewed experience of meeting God through reading His Word.

Why We Do What We Do

We want to help you meet God every day!

Scripture Union's ministry focuses in two vital areas: children and the Bible. We strive to share God's love with children and lead them to follow Jesus in obedience to Jesus' command to "let the little children come to me and not hinder them" (Mark 10:14). We work to help people of all ages to meet God every day through Bible reading and prayer because God's word is truly "a lamp to my feet and a light to my path" for all who read and obey it (Psalm 119:105). But why these two areas, children and the Bible, together?

SU focuses on ministry to children because childhood is the best time to begin a lifetime relationship with God. Recent studies by the Barna Group, a national research organization, found that the pre-teen years are the most fertile and critical for a person's faith formation. Barna's research affirmed what parents and educators have known for some time: a person's life-long behaviors and attitudes, including their spiritual beliefs, are developed during childhood.

"Primary Window" is Childhood

The Barna study found that nearly half of all people who accept Christ do so before the age of 13. In addition, the research found that people who accept Christ in their pre-teen years are more likely to remain "absolutely committed" to the Christian faith than those who convert later in life. It's no surprise, then, that the study concludes that "the primary window of opportunity for reaching people with the 'good news'" is during childhood. It's indeed true that childhood is the best time to begin a lifetime relationship with God. So Scripture Union focuses on ministry to children.

The Bible is Essential

8 out of 10 people in your church will never read through the Bible. Why the Bible? Because regular Bible reading is the best way to sustain and grow a lifetime relationship with God. The Barna research also shows a steady decline in the number of people, especially Christians, who are committed to regular, in-depth Bible reading. While 90% of people in the US own a Bible, fewer than 20% will ever read it through. The result is that most Christians have a worldview--a way of seeing life and making decisions--that is not significantly different from non-Christians. Yet, knowing God's word is essential to knowing God and having a growing, warm relationship with him. Bible reading is the best way to sustain and grow a lifetime relationship with God. So Scripture Union focuses on helping people meet God in the Bible.

Children and the Bible: the two key areas of Scripture Union's ministry. They're surely foundational to helping people meet God every day. That's why we do what we do.
